Джаан Ўолак нарадзілася ў Брукліне (Нью-Ёрк) у сям’і Лоці (народжанай Танэнбаўм) і Сэма Ўолака, настаўнікаў сярэдняй школы.

Дж. Скот вядомая перадусім сваімі постструктуралісцкімі працамі ў галіне фэмінісцкай гісторыі і гендэрнай тэорыі. Геаграфічна ейная праца сканцэнтраваная перш за ўсё на Францыі, а тэматычна яна разглядае, як дзейнічае ўлада, сувязь паміж мовай і досьведам, а таксама ролю і практыку гісторыкаў. Ейная праца зьвязаная з ужыткам тэорыі да гістарычных і актуальных падзеяў, асобую ўвагу надаючы таму, як вызначаюцца тэрміны і як фармулююцца пазыцыі і ідэнтычнасьці[3].

Сярод ейных шматлікіх публікацыяў асобнае месца займае артыкул "Гендэр: карысная катэгорыя гістарычнага аналізу", апублікаваны ў 1986 годзе ў часопісе "American Historical Review". Гэты артыкул — "несумненна, адзін з найбольш чытаных і цытаваных артыкулаў у гісторыі часопісу"[4], стаўся падмуркам фармаваньня поля гендэрнай гісторыі ў англа-амэрыканскай гістарычнай навуцы[5].

Апрача гэтага дасьледніца шмат аналізавала і пісала пра гендэр у гістарычнай пэрспэктыве ў зьвязцы з клясавым пытаньнем, а таксама працоўным пытаньнем. Так, ейны інтарэс да гісторыі эўрапейскай працоўнай клясы быў ахоплены ў 1980 годзе ў артыкуле "Political Shoemakers" (Палітычныя шаўцы), які Дж. Скот напісала разам з брытанскім гісторыкам Эрыкам Хабсбаўнам.

Зрэшты, на працягу 1990 -х гадоў Джаан Скот уключыла псыхааналіз у сваю працу па гендэрнай тэматыцы і гісторыі, разглядаючы яго як "тэорыю для прасоўваньня нашага разуменьня невырашальнай дылемы, якую працягваюць спараджаць сэксуальныя адрозьненьні"[7].
